Eagle Cam Observation for Unit 5

One eagle is laying down and seems bundled up in the nest. The other eagle is on high alert and looking around at the surrounding area. This eagle is a very curious one.

At this point in my observing, both eagles are tucked down and bundled into the nest.

Scientific Literacy

Scientific literacy, is an understanding and an idea of science as a whole in a written down and sometimes numerical formatting. In both lecture and lab, I have seen many different examples of scientific literacy. Some of which include the eagle cam observations from lecture, our species reports, presentations, and the cricket lab reflections/scientific papers from lab are all great examples of the work that we have done to show and exemplify scientific literacy. For the learning outcome that is written in the bold lettering, I feel as though this is a very important statement. I think it is especially important at UNE considering that we are a research university (scientifically based), and I think that understanding scientific literacy is a key component to that.

Posted below is my blue jay report, this serves as a great example of scientific literacy from this semester.

Cellular Respiration Questions and Answers

Question 1: What is cellular respiration?

  • Cellular respiration is defined as a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients to triphosphate, then eventually to waste.

Question 2: How is cellular respiration related to what you measured in the cricket lab?

  • In the cricket lab, we measured the respiration and metabolic rates of house crickets, and applied the methods of respiration in different temperatures to see how the crickets would react.

 

Eagle Cam Observation for Unit 3

1:00:47 pm  – Eagle is crouching in the nest. Doesn’t appear to be sitting all the way down yet.

2:00:23 pm – Nest is empty at the moment.

3:00:45 pm – Eagle is still not present in the nest, wind seems to be picking up a bit judging by the movement of the trees and the shakiness of the camera.

Food Diary Reflection Questions

4.) Looking at the class data, what conclusions can you draw about the nutritional value of the meals/snacks this group of students is consuming?

  • I can say that I feel like the dining hall is overall healthier than other dining halls at other schools, but I also think that there could be more variety in ours too

5.) Assuming the majority of the food consumed is from the commons dining hall and/or other dining venues on campus, what suggestions do you have for the food service managers?

  • I would suggest cooking foods with less oils and fats, and frying less too. I think workers and the dining services on campus need to remember that for those of us that live here, this is what we’re eating everyday, this is what the vast majority of us are consuming on a daily basis.

6.) What spices do you wish were available in the dining hall? Are there nutrients in spices?

  • I think that on its own, the food can be pretty bland, but it’s not bad. There are definitely plenty of spices available at the commons are around campus at other dining services as well.

 

The Nature of Science Before/After Video Responses

  • In what ways do you see yourself as a writer? Are you a poet? A journalist? A blogger?  What style of writing is most familiar and comfortable for you?
  • What is your impression of scientific writing?

My Responses – When it comes to writing, I would classify myself as a creative writer since that is my favorite style, but I also enjoy writing for school and the structure of academic essays (like having evidence and an argument). In terms of scientific writing, I think it is very interesting overall (depending on the subject matter).

  • How do Wilson’s ideas fit with your experience or ideas about scientific writing?
  • What if anything surprised you about Wilson’s description of scientists, and their emotions and values as they fit into the process of science?

My Responses – After watching the video, I feel more open and comfortable with scientific writing, no matter what the subject matter may be. I also feel like I gained some tips for this specific writing style as well. I really like how he described scientists and how they write what they think. I personally find this very admirable.

Blog #18

The goal for my personal revision strategy is to just overall be sure my paragraphs are clear and concise, and that everything works well enough with my thesis too. Some points that my peer review partners brought to my attention are to include more of my own opinion into my essay and my introduction, and to also introduce my quotes better as well. When and how I introduce and explain my quotes more, it will add to my writing and support my ideas and the evidence I found even more.

I will also try to find some more transition words as well so that my essay sounds as formal as it can be, and to include my own concept of beauty to go along with what it is like within the UNE community too.

Blog #17 – Working Multimodal Into My Final Draft

How I want to use the multimodal aspect in my essay.

When I start tidying up my essay and start creating a final draft, I would like to try and include more linguistic modes so I can be as specific as I can. I want to make sure my points and my stance is very clear and that everything flows together and stays consistent. Also, even though this is a written piece, if I can be descriptive enough I would love to try and incorporate visual aids into my writing as well, to help ease along readers into my ideas. I find that these visual aids keep me even more engaged into texts and articles when I see them on other platforms, so if I could somehow include these into mine that would be fantastic as well. A great example of this is in the article:

This article uses many different such as linguistic of course, visual, and spacial too.
